Backyard Birds of California Poster Print, Identification Chart with Latin Names, Wall Art

Backyard Birds of California is a chart of 16 birds you can see from a kitchen window in California, laid out like a vintage field guide: each bird drawn in a matching style, with its common name and its scientific name in italics.

THE 16 BIRDS
Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna), White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys), Black-headed Grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus), Lesser Goldfinch (Spinus psaltria), Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus), Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata), American Robin (Turdus migratorius), Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus), Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia), Bullock's Oriole (Icterus bullockii), House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos), American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis), Northern House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).

Some are seasonal: the Black-headed Grosbeak and Bullock's Oriole are summer birds, and the White-crowned Sparrow, Yellow-rumped Warbler and Dark-eyed Junco are mostly winter birds in the lowlands, though all three stay all year in the mountains. The art shows the western forms seen in California: the Oregon Dark-eyed Junco, the red-shafted Northern Flicker, the green-backed Lesser Goldfinch, Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow and Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler. The state bird, the California Quail, lives only in parts of the state, so it is not on this chart.

Before printing, we checked every species against California Department of Fish and Wildlife range accounts, Audubon's field guide and Project FeederWatch counts for California. The illustrations are stylized, so for a tricky bird keep a field guide or the Merlin app handy.
