Ranz Freehands are made by Ron Smith who lives in the Smokey Mountains in East Tennessee. Most of his pipes are done in the freehand style with some more classic shapes with his take on them. He has worked side by side with other American artisans like Scott Klein, Tim West and others to improve his craft. He’s also one of the few artisans trained in the beechwood finish that is very rare and I’ve only seen one in person but they are pretty cool.

Ron, on pipe shapes and styling:
"My gut feeling is that pipe smokers want something a little different, but which still resembles something familiar.”

This Ranz Freehand definitely fits the Freehand bill in both uses of the word. Handmade and influenced by the Danish freehand style, this Dublin shaped briar has an oval shape rim covered in live burl and natural edging.

It shows off nice straight-grain all around the bowl and up the shank sides as well. It sports a nice brass band as a transition to a really good looking green Cumberland stem. The stem is really nice and given the color, makes for a nice St. Patrick’s Day pipe as well. It has thick, stout dimensions with plenty of briar to insulate the chamber and a strong shank. The overall length to stoutness gives it a thickset design, sporting this nice hand-cut, crowned saddle stem, rather than a more traditional, long and thin pressure mount stem like many Freehands. There’s a gentle curve to the saddle that looks so nice and the width should make it a comfortable one to clench when needed.

The chamber shows some bare briar in the bottom half and light carbonization up top. My guess is the first owner smoked a handful of bowls just halfway down as some do. The pipe is in very nice condition and the only things I noticed was light or faded stamping and some inner rim darkening on that deep inside bevel to the chamber but it’s pretty mild. This is something I see with his pipes so it may just be his method of stamping isn’t the deepest. This pipe is too new to really be faded or over buffed I’d think. I could be wrong. The photo did a poor job of capturing the stamp on a curved surface as well but it has Ranz and Freehand curving around a star outline. There’s a small blemish on the left side of the bowl that appears to me, naturally occurring with the briar. Aside from that, all is in very nice shape!

It’s a great artisan made pipe and there’s a very long backstory on Ron’s website if you’re interesting in learning more and a good read. - Pete

*Review all photos and dimensions carefully prior to purchasing. I photo every angle so you can take a look at the beauty and condition. Review dimensions and weight as well to ensure this is the size you want. I take pride in my pipes and all are ready to smoke. - P

MORE INFO / STORE INFO +

I think of my shop like a nice Boutique store. You will not receive a pipe haphazardly wrapped in newspaper and a re-used box or envelope. I’ve put countless hours into refining as much as I can for the best experience possible. - Peter

If this listing is not an “or best offer” type, then the price is firm. I run on thin margins but try to do what I can with established customers.

I BUY PIPES! SINGLES OR ENTIRE COLLECTIONS. CONTACT ME FOR MORE INFO.

Signature Required on Delivery - For high price items and if you are a new customer, a signature on deliver may be required to prevent loss.

*If the pipe comes with an original box and / or pouch, I will certainly mention it in the description and usually shown in photos. Otherwise, it is for the pipe only, though I do package every one with a generic sock / pouch.

» You get what you pay for.
At a minimum, I do everything possible to make sure the pipe is at its best and packaged well. All pipes are carefully inspected, cleaned, gently buffed, waxed with Carnauba and the stems are hand polished and oiled as needed. For a decade, I’ve put all I have into these pipes, packaging and more. I really enjoy it and my fellow hobbyists.

BY PURCHASING A TOBACCO PIPE OR RELATED ITEMS FROM THIS STORE, YOU ATTEST / AFFIRM YOU ARE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD.

I do not have the time to reply to messages asking for deals. If I have room to move, I’ll list the pipe as “Or Best Offer.” Prices are firm. Please consider the large seller fees, taxes and equipment investments. If I don’t reply, no offense intended. It’s just time consuming to explain all this in each message. I appreciate your consideration.

Expect replies during normal business times. I reply as fast as I can, but if it’s the weekend or middle of the night, it may be a bit before I’m able to read and reply or if the weekend, I will reply on Monday.
