In 1732 Laura Bassi earned a doctorate at the University of Bologna, one of the first women in Europe to do so, and became the first woman member of Bologna's Academy of Sciences. With her husband, the physician and physicist Giuseppe Veratti, she ran a home laboratory and taught experimental physics for decades. In 1776, in her sixties, she was named professor of experimental physics at Bologna's Institute of Sciences, with her husband officially as her assistant.
