Highlights

A funny gift for librarians, Latin teachers and classics lovers: a chibi storybook-watercolor ancient Roman librarian, with a scroll tucked under one arm and one hand raised, says "Two thousand years. Still waiting on that late scroll."

A funny, cute library gift for a school or public librarian, a Latin or classics teacher, a book club or anyone who has ever had a book come back very, very late.

THE STORY BEHIND IT
Ancient Rome loved its libraries. The first public library in the city opened around 39 BC, and by the time of the emperors there were dozens, filled with papyrus scrolls stored in wooden cubbies. In AD 79 the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried a whole villa library at Herculaneum under volcanic ash, and its charred scrolls sat there for nearly two thousand years. Today scientists are finally reading them with X-ray scans, one long-overdue scroll at a time.
