Scarf yarn estimator by Envelo ScarfSum: the stitches to cast on, the rows to knit and how many skeins to buy – from your own swatch, with the fringe and a little spare.

Buy too little yarn and the last skein is from another dye lot; buy too much and it sits in the stash. ScarfSum works it out from a small swatch you knit and weigh, so it fits your yarn, your needles and your stitch.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Enter the scarf size you want, in cm or inches, and your gauge – stitches and rows over 10 cm (4 in), fractions too
• Enter your swatch size and weight and the grams and length of a skein from the yarn label
• Add a fringe: fringes at each end, strands in each, their length
• Get the stitches to cast on, the rows to knit, the yarn in grams and metres or yards, and the skeins to buy with your spare
• See how many strands to cut for the fringe and what is left over
• A pattern card with all of it: download as SVG or print on A4 or US Letter
• Backup and restore

EXAMPLE INSIDE
A made-up garter-stitch scarf, 20 × 160 cm, in worsted wool at 18 stitches and 24 rows over 10 cm, with 10 fringes of 3 strands at each end. The scarf takes 144.4 g and the fringe 8.3 g; with 10 % spare that is 4 skeins of 50 g, about 32 g left over. Cast on 36, knit 384 rows.

LANGUAGES
The app switches between English, Español, Français, Deutsch, Português, Italiano, Nederlands, Polski, Русский, हिन्दी and العربية (right to left).

3. Enter your scarf, your swatch and your yarn. Everything updates as you type and saves in your browser.
