Seller's description

FISH DESIGN - The Southwest Collection
This design was inspired by the beautiful Mimbres pottery of the Mogollon people. The pottery from the Mimbres region is distinct in style decorated with stylized animals, birds, fish, people and geometric designs in black paint on a white background. Many of the fish designs are of saltwater fish from the Gulf of California which is over 500 kilometers away.

These motifs seem to suggest that the Mogollon were descendants of early farmers who migrated north from central Mexico around 3500 BC. They inhabited the Southwest until 1350 A.D. The Hopi and Zuni are most likely descended from these peoples.

This ORIGINAL DESIGN by Artist, Linda Henry was inspired by the motifs of the indigenous people of the Southwest.

♦ THE SOUTHWEST COLLECTION
The process of creating these designs was inspired by the beauty and artistry of Molas made by the Kuna Indian women of Central America. Molas are hand sewn using a process known as reverse appliqué. Layers of brightly colored fabric are basted together and a design is drawn on the uppermost layer. The Mola is then crafted by cutting away the various layers of fabric to reveal the underlying colors. Molas often depict pairs of animals, fish and birds in a colorful and bold decorative style.

♦ Working with her hand-painted papers, Linda created this collection using the basic concept of reverse appliqué. The design emerges as successive layers of color are cut away.

♦ This design is also available as a:
1) 5" x 7" GREETING CARD
2) FINE ART PRINT with a FREE Custom-cut Mat
