"Let me praise—if I can—the stunning sense of place, here in West Virginia. In the other 20 states so far, yes, I did find ways in which American culture was vibrant, unique, quirky. But I also found that you can always "go into town." In other words, there's always a handy escape valve from culture, a way to go to a place with soulless, broad streets laid out on a grid from which all mystery has been leeched, a place dominated by the outlets of national companies. But in Tucker County, West Virginia, there is no "going into town." There is only humanity, dwarfed by mountains, awed by silence. Streets are not laid out in a grid, they barely win a day-by-day battle with nature. In other places, I felt I was discovering a new and exciting part of my own country. In West Virginia, I keep checking my pocket, wondering where my passport is. The giant trees, rushing brooks, and looming hills still thrum with the aura of mystery, of the undying ages declining to yield their secrets.
