here's the difference in gauges: both are BIGGER than commercial ear wires. 18ga hoops are shown in the images and is smaller than 16ga

the 16ga size wire is LARGER diameter than the 18ga ear wires which gives it extra strength and a wider hammered area. it is also better for keeping its shape. the 16ga will be "wider" in the hammered portion than those shown in the listing photos.

if you have sensitive ears or smaller holes, this probably won't work for you.
