Torquay Motto Ware, Cottage Pattern
This listing is for both miniature pitchers.
If you are not familiar with Torquay - here is a tad of history:
England's Torquay pottery has been a popular collectible over the years. The Devon Motto Ware is by far the most popular of the Torquay wares in the United States and Canada. In 1867 the local, dark red clay was rediscovered by its owner, Mr. G. J. Allen, an astute and educated gentleman who had the clay chemically analyzed. Once his suspicions were confirmed- that the clay possessed unique qualities-he erected a pottery on the spot and named it Watcombe Terra Cotta Clay Company. Realizing the potential value of the clay, he began producing pieces that we still love today. The patterns, quaint rhymes and proverbs have attracted collectors for over 100 years. It has a country look that primitive collectors adore!
I have a small grouping of Motto Ware that I am listing - the entire grouping is shown in the last photo. This listing is for the two miniature pitchers, each measuring about 2 inches in height. This is one of the hardest to find pieces because so many were broken or lost due to their small size.
Each has a charming motto on its reverse side and the cottage on the font side:
'A stitch in time saves nine.'
'Fine words will not fill.'
Each is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or flaking. One pitcher has a craze line consistent with age. Just darling little antique collectibles.
