Knit these cheerful Merry Christmas banners to brighten up your home for the holidays!
These festive banners show off your holiday spirit. Bright and bold, they display a cheerful “Merry Christmas” greeting. The banners are constructed using double knitting, and feature a checkered pattern on the back. There is also an option to knit them using the more traditional double knitting technique, resulting in the reversed pattern on the back.
The finished size of the “Merry” banner is approximately 5.5” (13.97 cm) by 38” (96.52 cm). The finished size of the “Christmas” banner is approximately 5.5” (13.97 cm) by 51” (129.54 cm). The color work design is charted, not written instructions.
Note: This is not a typical double knitting pattern. The back and front are different, so this design is fairly complicated. If you would like to try a simpler double knitting design first, I suggest my Pawprints Scarf or another simple double knitting design.

Yarn
Worsted weight yarn in the following amounts:
- Approximately 210-230 yards of red yarn for “Merry” banner (background color).
- Approximately 290-320 yards of green yarn for “Christmas” banner (background color).
- Approximately 290-320 total yards of white yarn:
- 125-140 yards for “Merry” banner (foreground color).
- 165-180 yards for “Christmas” banner (foreground color).
Needles
- Size 5 US (3.75 mm) knitting needles.
Gauge
31 rows and 25 stitches = 4” in stockinette
- or -
27 rows and 22 stitches = 4” in double knit
Note: The finished size will be more accurate if you knit your gauge in double knit.

I knit this in light gray and black and it turned out beautifully! It took a long time, because of the fingering weight yarn, but it was fairly easy if you are already familiar with double knitting.

I've never done double-sided knitting before, but the instructions included in the pattern were super easy to understand and let me hit the ground running on this project. The pattern itself is extremely clear and having the marker placements written up as well as shown on the chart has been a huge help. Very excited to get this project knit up!
