Middle Bay Light House is a historic monument located in the middle of Mobile Bay, AL that boaters of all kinds have depended on and appreciated since 1885. It has been maintained and restored countless times over the many years so thankfully, you can still see and enjoy it today.
My dad, Gene Gleaves, grew up in a house overlooking Mobile Bay on the Eastern Shore. As my siblings and I grew up, it seems we never lived too far from the Bay and we always had some kind of boat. My favorite boats were the sailboats over the years that we enjoyed many weekend family trips together and learned to love being out on the water like dad did. He taught us that to be out on the water was to breath in new life, leaving your worries behind. We learned to embrace life moment by moment with every shift in wind direction, tack of the sails, turn of the wench, and sound of the waves lapping on the boat. We were transported to another place and time, and it seemed almost magical. At night we were lulled sleep as we listened to the sound of the ropes gently clanging against the mast, and the sound of the waves gently lapping against the sides of the boat as it gently rocked us from side to side.
The hotter it was in the Summer sun the more we appreciated the breeze while sailing. Many times as we sailed back home, it would be so hot dad would put out the anchor near the Middle Bay lighthouse so we could all take a swim and cool off before the final trek of our journey home. Those long weekends were some of my favorite memories growing up.
Artist Biography updated Oct 16, 2018
I graduated from the University of South Alabama with a BFA in graphic design in 1985. My primary areas of concentration in college, and in the years to follow, have been Drawing and Printmaking, although I also enjoy working in Pastel and Oil Painting. Over the years I have participated in many outdoor art shows, exhibited my work in local galleries and had my work accepted, exhibited, and awarded in various National Shows across the United States. One of my pastels, “Late Summer afternoon on the LeTort” was printed in a Fly Fishing Book published by Stackpole Books called “Selectivity”, written by a well-known author and fly fishing guide. I was also blessed to have a large color etching displayed in the Augusta National Club House, accepted and sold at the Master’s Golf Tournament from 1992-94. I was very fortunate my “Augusta National, View from Magnolia Lane” color etching was purchased by many patrons from Miami to California, Europe to South Africa as well as from the Far East. Truly humbled and honored, some of my patrons were past Master’s champions.
I enjoyed the opportunity to teach Youth and Adult, Drawing and Printmaking classes at the Danville Community Art Center in KY from 2011 to 2015 until my husband and I moved back to Ohio. We currently reside in Beavercreek, OH where I work full time in my home studio and am excited as I begin putting down roots in the Art community in and around the Dayton area.
