For over twenty years I was one of the people responsible for maintaining the hummingbird collection at the Arizona-Sonora desert Museum in Tucson, AZ. I created my first hummingbird feeders in 2006 when the hummingbird aviary was inundated with so many bees that the hummingbirds couldn't get to the food in the typical-style feeders we used.

In addition to being bee and wasp-proof, my feeders are easy to clean and are virtually unbreakable...factors necessary for zookeepers who change 30 feeders twice daily.

All pieces are solid copper which is left unsealed to allow the development of a natural patina.

Note: My feeders hold less food than the average hummingbird feeder. Here's why:
In order to be effective at deterring bees and wasps there must be NO sugar water on the outside of the feeders where the insects can get to it. Sometimes hummingbirds are a little messy and will drip food while feeding and the easiest way to be certain that there isn't a build-up of the sweet stuff on the feeder tops is to change the food containers DAILY.
Larger containers would result in wasted sugar water.
All this being said, if there are no bee issues, most people find that 1-3 hummingbirds empty one jar of food in about 2 days (depending on the time of year, other available food sources, whether one bird is capable of defending the feeder from other birds, etc).*

*any hummingbird feeder should be changed every 2-3 days to ensure freshness.
