The Sunrise Shell is prized for its rarity. It is found only in the Hawaiian Islands, and rarely found on the beach. Most of them are found by divers, deep in the ocean. My Sunrise Shells are found by my husband and a close family friend. Our Sunrise Shell creations are a true LABOR OF LOVE. From diving to extreme depths to unearth these beauties beneath layers of sand, to the labor-intensive processing of the shell (to remove any natural calcification of the shell), to the final design and creation of a beautiful piece of heirloom Sunrise Shell jewelry. This is definitely my favorite way to wear my Sunrise Shells! Beautiful in its simplicity, with no wire-anchors in the front to detract from the stunning beauty of the shell. Just pure, clean, and simple. :0) I hand-form and hand-hammer a heavy-gauge bail that I epoxy in place from the back. The epoxy fills in the back of the shell, strengthening it, and is also visually appealing. It has a beautiful clear, glass-like appearance. But it is "personal preference" - if you prefer the wire-anchors that run across the front and back of the shell, I can recreate this same style that way too. Many of my clients like the wires running along the front of the shell as an extra "glint" or sparkle of gold. They feel it really "dresses up" the shell. :0) All personal preference...

This Sunrise Shell Necklace was custom made for a client. I would love to make a necklace just for you! This necklace is finished with a 14k gold-filled chain with a rich orange Carnelian gemstone and a deep pink and an almost clear Rose Quartz at each of the adjustable clasp lengths (17", 18", and 19"). If you prefer other gemstones or pearls for your clasp, or other lengths for your chain, please let me know. :0)

One last detail and choice to make: I completely fill in the entire back of the shell with jewelers epoxy. You can also choose a little "surprise" for the back of the shell (to be set into the epoxy). I can put a REAL starfish (pic #3) or a Koru symbol (a spiral, swirl design) (Pic #2).

MEANINGS:

The Koru is based on the Maori koru fern, as it opens up and unfurls. It means New Life, New Beginning, Circle-of-Life, or Eternity.

The Starfish is able to grow a new arm or regenerate itself. For this reason, the starfish symbolizes someone who is able to go through any situation and come out whole or stronger on the other side of that situation. Someone who can "weather any storm"...
