Highlights

I created this pattern of my nephew David's quarter horse Rose. With the directions, you can make an 18"x 18" wallhanging or pillow.

Supplies Needed

Densely woven Fabric
Brown
Rosey Brown
Dark Brown
Light Tan
Gray
Dark Gray
Black
Pink
White
Green
Green Background

Additional supplies:
Sharp scissors
Black Sharpie
1.25 yards of Lightweight Iron-on Fusible Webbing (or Optional: use heavy weight Iron-on Fusible Webbing for a NO SEW project)
Iron

The following are necessary if you plan to quilt your Horse
Backing and Binding Fabric
Batting
Sharp new narrow sewing machine needles (sizes 80 and 90)
Sewing Machine
Sewing needle
Quilting safety pins or temporary fabric adhesive spray

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Read all instructions before beginning to familiarize yourself with the process.
2. Select and press all fabric (wrinkles must be removed prior to applying the fusible webbing).
3. Cut the background fabric exactly 18x18 inches (all pieces are fused to it).
4. Trace and number all pattern pieces onto the paper side of the fusible webbing along the outside edge of each solid line.
5. Iron the pattern pieces to the wrong side of the fabrics. Use the fusible webbing manufacturer’s instructions for heat setting and pressing times.
6. Cut along all solid lines (the dotted lines show where the fabric will be overlapped).
DO NOT FUSE ANY PATTERN PIECES TO THE BACKGROUND UNTIL ALL PIECES HAVE BEEN PLACED CORRECTLY.
7. Conveniently stack all pieces in number order.
8. Use the Horse Placement Guide to place all pieces in number order over the background fabric. Remove the paper backing before each piece is placed. Be careful to overlap correctly.
9. Adjust all pieces until your Horse has come to life.
This is always my most exciting moment to see my project take on a life of its own!

10. Follow the fusible webbing manufacturer’s instructions to permanently fuse all pieces in place.
If you are using the optional heavy-weight fusible webbing, your NO SEW project is ready for framing.

11. Use matching thread to topstitch all raw edges (I use 2.0 stitch length and size 80 needle).
Achieve a professional look by not back tacking, instead pull the threads to the back side and use a square knot to secure.
At this point, you could use the horse design as an 18”x18” pillow top.

Quilt your Horse, using the following steps.
12. Cut the batting and backing fabric.
13. Pin all layers together (or use temporary fabric adhesive spray).
14. Change to a size 90 sharp needle and stitch length 2.5. Keep the Horse flat as you quilt (mostly stitch ‘in the ditch’) from the center outwards, changing to matching thread as you go. The color photo can be your guide for the quilt lines.
15. Use green thread to stitch around the Horse, then continue to quilt the background.
16. Attach the binding and a pocket for hanging with a rod.

Congratulations! You have finished your project. I hope you enjoyed creating her as much as I did

This pattern reminds me of my horse Tiara. Wonderful Quarterhorse! She was about 30 years old when she passed from a lung infection. I miss her very much. She was my best and loyal friend. I've been in the planning stages of a quilt to tell my life story for my grandchildren. I will be including this pattern in my quilt. Thank you so much for bringing her to life with fabric!! God bless.
