The Icon Stella Maris or Our Lady Star of the Sea is set at the dark of night and reflects the difficulties of life sensed more deeply at night and perhaps also of the times of the dark night of our souls. The star is Sirius, the largest and most brilliant star in the heavens. In the boat are the discpiles helped by Mary in their work. She is the guiding star for them in this icon. Also a symbol of sailors and seafarers looking up to God to help them in hard times while out in the sea.

TECHNIQUE:
I painted the icon on a wooden panel with a stucco canvas on top with tempera and a 22 K gold leaf for the halo of Mary. The image is well sealed with a couple of transparent varnish layers so that the colors are crispier and also to allow the icon to be cleaned from dust easily. The back of the icon is varnished in darker tone. There is metal ring on top for easy hanging.

The size of the icon is approx 20x25cm (8x10) and approx 2cm deep
