Silk Georgette is a fabric that I absolutely adore!
That’s why I'd love to provide you with a little bit of the background story on this beautiful fabric, let you know why I’ve chosen it to use it and how you can best care for your silk georgette kimono.
Originating in France, Georgette, a type of woven fabric, was created by and named after a Parisian dressmaker Georgette de la Plante.
Georgette is traditionally made from silk, hence silk georgette – the name of the fabric I am making my kimonos and kaftans from – although you can often find slightly less luxurious versions of georgette made from polyester. Silk georgette is thin, lightweight and has a sheer, translucent quality.
The yarns used to weave silk georgette are highly twisted, creating a slightly grainy surface texture – a bit like a crepe fabric. These twisted yarns also give the fabric a slight spring. Both features are particularly distinctive and will help you to recognise silk georgette fabric on first touch.
Silk georgette is thought of as an alternative to silk chiffon (even though they do have slightly different qualities and behaviour.) I chose to use it for my beautiful paisley printed kaftans and kimono capes, items I am very excited about and particularly proud of.
With its dull finish, silk georgette can on first glance, appear to be quite a humble fabric, but in fact it has some of the best qualities a garment could ask for.
Silk is very absorbent, meaning silk georgette can be easily dyed a variety of different colours and happily decorated with different printing methods, such as digital printing.
Silk georgette drapes like a pro. It is flowing, graceful and soft, moving with the wearer and making them feel like a princess. This is another reason why it is used by so many fashion designers!
Despite its feminine drape, and the ability to flatter any woman, silk georgette is actually very strong and durable, particularly when you compare it to other fabrics created from silk, such as silk chiffon.

Whilst silk georgette can look after itself for the most part, garments created from silk georgette require a little extra care. I recommend hand washing in cold or lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Do not machine wash it; do not rub, soak, wring or bleach. Do not tumble dry. Air dry it in shade away from direct sunlight, as this can fade the brilliant colours that the fabric was previously infused with! Iron at low temperature.
