This is an early 20th century or older cattle amulet from Afghanistan. Used by farmers in Central Asia, this type of amulet would be put around the neck of an animal to protect it from the evil eye, sickness or accidents.

There would be a prayer written on paper and put inside the carved out section and sealed with either wax or a wooden plug. When the animal died, the prayer would be removed and let go in a river.

This beautiful patinaed artifact stands on it's own as a shelf or wall decoration or looks great placed with others in groupings.
