MULTAN, KNOWN AS THE CITY OF SUFIS, IS IN MODERN-DAY PAKISTAN IN THE PUNJAB PROVINCE. MULTAN IS FAMOUS FOR ITS EARTHENWARE AND CERAMIC POTTERY IN RICH HUES OF BLUE.

In 1886, William Griggs launched the Journal of Indian Art. It was the first Journal dedicated to describing & showing Indian Art. The chief purpose of the Journal of Indian Arts was "to put on permanent record, by description and illustration, good works of the past, and to set up standards... to conform to". Publisher William Griggs contributed to the invention of photo-chromo-lithography, and used this method, as well as collotype, heliogravure, and others to illustrate articles on India's art and industry. Expansively illustrated and beautifully produced, the Journal was often published at a loss, and ceased publication in 1917. Extremely rare work: the early volumes are particularly hard-to-find, are now priced upwards of $4,000 per volume by booksellers.
