Tagua - rhymes with agua, the Spanish word for water.

These unique lightweight stacking bracelets are an earthy combination of colorful tagua nut hollow triangle slices, various colors of Czech Picasso seed beads, wooden tubes and/or wooden rondelle beads nestled against colorful lightweight resin rounds hand knotted on color coordinated silk thread. The tagua nut slices are hand carved which insures that each bracelet is truly one of a kind.

The tagua palm, family of the coconut palm tree grows in the amazon region of Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador. It produces one of the most interesting of all seeds due to its extreme hardness and similarity to ivory. Given trade restrictions in elephant ivory as well as animal welfare concerns, ivory palm endosperm is often used as a substitute for elephant ivory today, and traded as vegetable ivory, palm ivory, corozo or tagua.

The “nut” is covered with a brown, flaky skin and shaped like a small avocado. As the nut shrinks and hardens a small hollow cavity can form in the center. The tagua seeds/nuts are harvested after they have fallen to the ground, so no harm is done to the rainforest during the production process. The collection of this natural product helps provide incentive to local forest inhabitants to protect the trees, keeps the rainforest intact and stimulates local economies in South America.

For my purposes the Tagua’s hard yet porous material allows it to be readily dyed in an array of colors while still retaining the natural bark on the sides. Each Tagua seed/nut is unique, slight variations in shape and size are natural characteristics and should be expected.

The resin beads are handmade in Java, Indonesia in a "fair trade" cottage industry. These resin rounds are produced by mixing liquid resin with a hardener and color. The resulting bead is then hand-shaped, sanded and drilled. These beads are lightweight, durable, non-toxic, and colorfast. They look like glass beads with a frosted appearance.

PLEASE NOTE: This bracelet should not be submerged in water for prolonged periods of time.

The bracelets range from in size from 7 ¼ ” to 7 ¾” long. All findings are sterling silver.
