Highlights

This wool blanket, called a lizhnyk, is traditionally handwoven in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine from natural sheep wool. Each one is made on a wooden loom, giving it a texture that is always slightly different and unique to its maker.

A lizhnyk can be used in many ways: as a cozy blanket, a rug, a bedspread, wall décor, or even as a meaningful gift. Its beauty and practicality allow each owner to find their own special use for it :)

To make one medium-sized blanket, you have to work long and hard. I use only natural wool from sheep raised in the high Carpathian mountain pastures, along with natural dyes.
First, the wool must be washed and dried thoroughly, then combed with a special tool that makes it puff up and resemble a cloud.
The combed wool is easy to manipulate and is spun into threads, which are then used to weave a lizhnyk on a loom (in the mountains, handmade looms are mostly used).
The woven product is then placed in a special device called a valylo—a huge wooden barrel that narrows toward the bottom.
Water is piped in with great force, creating a whirlpool in which the blankets spin for hours.
After this process, lizhnyks become dense yet fluffy.

➤ Recommended care:

Instead of wasting your time, give your item a nice vigorous shake, and most of the debris stuck to it will come off. 🙂
If you accidentally spill something like coffee or wine on it, run that area under slightly warm water. Once the stain has been rinsed out, give it a gentle squeeze. Afterward, place the item on a surface with good airflow, and make sure to flip it periodically until it dries.
For rugs, you can use a vacuum cleaner.
If the item becomes heavily soiled, please take it to a dry cleaner.
