Kupittaan Kulta was the creation of Elis Kauppi, who founded the company in 1945 in Turku, Finland. Finnish companies like Kupittaan Kulta, Kalevala, and Kaunis Koru were not only leaders in Finnish or even Scandinavian jewelry design, but they were also sources for the best of what we think of as Mid-Century Modernism today. Kauppi, for instance, pushed the envelope in his sleek and abstract but unmistakably modern designs, as well as in his frequent use of local stones. The international recognition he received triggered demands for Finnish design and, indeed, spawned and cemented the place of a Finnish modernist aesthetic in design history.

This ring epitomizes that design aesthetic. It is simple, it is innovative in how the “bezel” holds (more like embraces) the stone (called a “caged ball” or “trapped ball” design), and it is undeniably iconic: You look at this ring and you know it’s the work of a Finnish modernist master. Finnish designs from this period (1960s-1970s) and those from the leaders like Elis Kauppi, are highly prized. They are only getting rarer and pricier!
