The Projection Collection is a tribute to the cartographers, mathematicians, and designers who had to break the rules to show the world with a new perspective. Steve Waterman's Butterfly projection derived from his work on the polyhedron. During the 1990s', the mathematician worked on packing spheres and cubic closest packing theory to create a large family of polyhedra.
This projection, strongly inspired by Bernard J.S. Cahill's Butterfly map (1909) is using a flattened W5 polyhedron. As shown in its Pacific centered version, the continents appear uninterrupted. Cartography was always a mixed discipline where Science meets Art. The Projection Collection is following this precept, involving computer programming and graphic design.

Due to a high pigment density on saturated and dark areas, it is safer to handle the poster with gloves, preferably made of soft fabric but latex is ok.

I ordered 3 maps from Jonathan for my office. They shipped VERY fast. I received these in a few days even though they came from Europe to the US. These maps are works of art. They reflect my interests and personality but are still appropriate for work. The 18" x 24" prints are slightly smaller than that (22.5" x 16") with a surrounding white boarder, so I would recommend getting & measuring your maps before purchasing a frame/mat. The black is VERY black and looks very nice. I'm so happy I found these unique projections.
