Is the mantels solid pieces of wood or multiple pieces constructed together?

Our floating shelves and fireplace mantels are all REAL solid reclaimed wood from old barns and houses and other structures. Do not be fooled by imitation "reclaimed wood"

How are the shelves mounted?

This will depend on the thickness and style of the piece. Many of our 2" thick shelves will have visible L brackets but do come floating as well. For anything 3" thick or thicker, we send standard floating shelf brackets that mount to the wall. Corresponding holes will need to be drilled in the back of your piece using a 1/2" diameter drill bit. Instructions are included with each piece. These pieces can also be upgraded to a heavy duty mounting bracket as well. If you decide to upgrade, the item will come pre-drilled. The hand hewn and authentic 6x6 beams come with the heavy duty hardware as the standard and are pre-drilled.

Do any of the pieces come pre-drilled?

The pieces do not come pre-drilled unless an upgraded bracket option, hand hewn beam, or authentic 6x6 beam is purchased. Because no two applications or stud locations are the same, we do not pre-drill the pieces for standard brackets. We can do so as an add on for $25 and your stud measurements will need to be provided. This add on is an additional listing within the shop that you can add to your cart for checkout if needed! Please note custom pre-drilling will make the pieces custom.

If I order multiple pieces, will they match?

When planning on hanging multiple pieces together, we STRONGLY recommend ordering them all at the same time. This will ensure that we are able to match the colors, characteristics, and dimensions as closely as possible. Due to the nature of the material and this being 100% authentic, reclaimed barn wood if not ordered together, we can NOT ensure they will match, even with photos and measurements for reference.

What's Included?
Artisan finished barnwood hand hewn fireplace mantel and heavy duty mounting bracket. The back of the hand hewn is routed out and pre-drilled for the bracket.

Wood Origin
These handcrafted fireplace mantels are made from authentic reclaimed hand hewn barn beams salvaged from historic barns throughout the Eastern United States dating from the 1700's to the early 1900's. Popular locations include Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Ohio and Kentucky.

Characteristics
Checking (a natural characteristic of wood), knots, nail holes, hewing/axe marks, mortise pockets, peg holes, and worm holes.
Almost all Hand Hewn Mantels will have Checking and Mortise Pockets and ALL will have Axe Markings.

Dimensions
Available sizes include 6 to 8 inch thickness by 6 to 8 inch depth. Lengths are available from 48 to 84 inches (custom sizes available).

Thickness and depth can vary up to 1 inch.

Modern Timber Craft is not responsible for mantel shelf installation. Seek guidance from a licensed professional before affixing shelf to wall surface. Installation may require more than the hardware provided. Always make sure your shelf is properly secured to the wall before leaving unattended.

Each piece is DIFFERENT; meaning that no two are the same. This is because each craftsman had their own unique style of hewing a log. Remember these were round logs HAND CUT into square beams. Each and every shelf is unique with many grain variations, knots, worm holes, checks, nail holes, notches, mortise pockets, etc.
Wood Species of product will vary from piece to piece.
The ends will always be cut, sanded completely smooth and left natural.

It is important to understand that dimensional variations will exist from piece to piece. The overall length will be cut to your specified length, however, the Height x Depth dimension MAY vary.
