Highlights
When you love vintage transferware plates like I do, this plate could be one you would just love to display!
This plate was made by Royal Cauldon, in England. In the 1940's Royal Cauldon designed a series of plates they called "Historic Buildings of England". I have three of these plates I am offering in my shop and have listed them separately. This listing is for the plate "Glastonbury Abbey".
Glastonbury Abbey was founded in the 7th century, England, and is the earliest Christian foundation in Britain. Today the Abbey is in ruins, but it was reported as the burial place of King Arthur so it retains all of the mysteries of times long ago and is a Grade 1 listed building with thousands of visitors a year.
This plate was formed in the mold in a very lovely design. The outer edge of the plate has a cut out to it's round form. Raised dots lead inward to a feather design, then a double line with a rope design in the center. In the center of the plate is a brown transferware of Glastonbury Abbey with it's ruins. Tall walls and arched windows line the hall that leads to a covered building. The abbey is set in a field of flowers and tall trees. A clear glaze was added before the final firing of the plate.
The underside of the plate is stamped with the Royal Cauldon crown seal, states "Royal Cauldon", "England", "Est 1774",and "Made in England".
This is a full size plate. It measures 9 1/2" round and stands 3/4" high.
This plate is in good vintage condition. There is no crazing or loss to the transferware pattern or glazings used. There is one tiny chip, as seen in photo 2, and I have adjusted the price to reflect this.
A beautiful series of plates, it would look wonderful displayed in a cabinet or on a wall, or even could be used as a serving piece at your dinner!
