I am very proud to have a friend who tans (preservation and dying method) reindeer leather hides by hand, using lots of bark from native trees. It´s a very labor-intensive and time-consuming process that takes weeks to complete. These hides age beautifully. It is hard to find hand tanned reindeer leather since so few artisans do it today.

BACKGROUND AND MATERIAL INFORMATION ABOUT SWEDART JEWELRY:

The jewelry has its origin in the 10,000-year-old indigenous Sami culture of Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. After the Sami semi-domesticated wild reindeer in the 1600s, the Sami moved like nomads with the herds throughout the seasons. Today, Sami reindeer herders have permanent homes but still follow the herds during periods of the year.

Reindeer husbandry is the sole livelihood of a dwindling amount of reindeer owning Sami families today. Of Sweden´s 17,000 Sami, there are only 2,500-3,000 Sami (formerly called Laplanders or Lapps) who live near or above the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland who own herds of reindeer (caribou).

Meat production is the main reason for reindeer herding. The hides and antlers are bi-products used for many different purposes. Sami artisans have made beautiful crafts of reindeer leather with details of antlers and embroidered spun pewter and for hundreds of years. Soft and yet strong reindeer leather is considered to be one of the finest leathers in the world, and it has been tanned in northern Sweden.

SwedArt jewelry has been handmade of soft top-grade reindeer leather and high quality spun pewter wire (a nickel-free alloy with 4% silver). A few leather colors are European lambskin or goatskin. The wire is spun around a strong synthetic sinew thread on a small machine in northern Sweden. The button is hand-carved of reindeer antler tips, the leather loop has been reinforced with synthetic sinew, and the leather is hand-sewn with strong synthetic sinew thread.
