Some people like to read a good book. I'd rather read a good atlas. And in an atlas there are place names and with some place names I think: how? (Secretly, there's usually a very easy explanation for it, but reality isn't half as much fun as the imagination.) In the Netherlands you have so many "how then" places that you could fill a map with it. With this one.
How do you determine which place will be on the map and which will not?
With my topographically savvy wet finger. If a place name brought a smile, I took it with me, so it depends entirely on my own sense of humor. Some names just sound weird (Fiemel), others testify to a huge dry lumpiness (what do we call our village? Just, Village!), still others are fun in context (Hollum and Ballum, One and One-West) or simply remarkable (Numero Thirteen, The Last Penny).
