PDF Horse Blanket and Sheet Pattern

This listing is for the download of a PDF sewing pattern to make a wide variety of sheets and blankets for your horse in sizes 58-84. IT IS NOT FOR A PHYSICAL PAPER PATTERN. We give specific instructions for the following styles: Sheet or single layer blanket, two layer blanket, and insulated blanket with belly warmer. The first two styles can have bias or straight surcingle placement. The basic pattern is semi-contoured with the options of leg straps, fleece withers protector, and tail cord. You can mix and match various options to create your own customized sheet or blanket. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS PATTERN FOR TURNOUT BLANKETS, because they require more rugged construction than home sewing machines can produce.

The PDF file includes instructions illustrated with diagrams and the blanket/sheet and belly warmer pattern pieces. All of the sizes are nested. Measurement diagrams and charts are included. Download the file using Adobe Reader and print out the pages using 8 1/2" by 11" or A4 paper.

FABRICS AND NOTIONS

Sheets can be made from cotton duck, other cotton and cotton blend fabrics, and heavyweight outerwear nylon such as packcloth or Cordura™. For cool-down and anti-sweat sheets use terrycloth and cotton or cotton blend mesh. For dress sheets use washable wool and wool blends. For single layer blankets use blanket weight fabrics, old blankets, coat weight wool, and pre-quilted and pre-lined fabrics. For two layer blankets use heavyweight nylon or cotton-type fabrics for the outer layer and fleece or blanket-type materials for the inner layer. For insulated blankets use heavyweight outerwear nylon for the outer layer, insulation such as needlepunch or Thinsulate™ for the middle, and ripstop nylon for the lining. For straps use nylon or polypropylene webbing. Seat belting also works well for surcingles. For binding edges use nylon foldover braid or other bias bindings. Surcingle buckles are used for surcingle straps. Regular buckles are generally used for front straps. Any type of buckle can be used as long as they are strong enough.

Also needed: Thread, For 2 straight surcingles- 5 5/8 YDS 2” webbing, two 2” surcingle buckles and sliders; For 2 bias surcingles- 6 5/8 YDS 2” webbing, two 2” surcingle buckles and sliders; For 1 straight surcingle- 2 7/8 YDS 2” webbing, one 2” surcingle buckle and slider; For front straps- 1 1/8 YD 1” webbing, 2 1” buckles; For bellywarmer- 18” of 2” wide elastic, 60” of 2” wide hook-and-loop tape; For leg straps- 2 1/2 YDS 1” webbing, 4 1” D-rings, 4 1” snap hooks, 2 1” sliders; For hood connectors- 3/8 YD 1” webbing, 3 1” D-rings; For tail cord- 3/4 YD 1” webbing, 2 1” D-rings, 2 1” snap hooks; For withers protector- 4” by 12” piece of fleece.
