What to know

Blank Journal, 192p., 8 1/4" x 5 5/8" x 7/8" thick. Spine and corners of green or red morocco, sides of mermaid skin (pre-1968 ban). Edges in a shimmering green/gold or red/gold with top edge colored. Smooth spine, tooled in gold.

Handsewn on two linen tapes, 60# cream white Mohawk Via Vellum.

For those interested in the material used on the sides, this from the Mermaid Quarterly:
"Mermaids are an aquatic creature - generally saltwater - with the head and upper body of a female human and the tale of a fish. Overfished in the nineteenth century, several important treaties and a rising tide of public opinion led to a ban both on their harvest and the import/export of their skins. These books are made with skins harvested pre-ban and are thus legal to purchase. Though their habitats are not static, the Indonesian mermaid is generally known for it's blue/green shimmer while natives of the Andalusian coast are almost invariably a deep pink/red."
