The Ianto is primarily a classic cycling cap or a welding cap and so it can be worn under helmets or by itself. It offers 2 STYLE OPTIONS: a 6-panel style and a 3-panel style. The pattern also includes instructions for optional racing stripes, fusible images and elastic fitting. The cap can be made of lightweight breathable fabric for hot weather or sweaty activity or out of wool, canvas or suiting fabric for more of a more stylized look.

HAT SIZES:
19"-25" (pre-toddler to adult large) measuring around the head above the ear

FABRIC and NOTIONS:
• ¼ yard of fabric
• Thread to match fabric
• 3” of elastic (3/4” wide, optional)
• Grosgrain ribbon (26” long, 1” wide)
• 8”x3” piece of plastic or craft felt (options for bill insert)
• Iron-on adhesive (optional for felt bill and trim)
• Bias tape ⅜” - ½” wide (optional for securing seam allowances and/or racing stripe trim)

RECOMMENDED FABRICS:
For a cycling or welding cap, worn under a helmet, fabric should be lightweight, breathable and washable. For most months of the year, I recommend cotton, cotton/poly blend, flannel, poly mesh with little to no stretch. Alternatively, if you’d like the look of a tweed cap (for cooler weather), I recommend a light to medium weight wool or polyester suiting that has the desired look of wool. Avoid genuine wool if this cap is going to be worn for cycling, welding or other sweaty activity and will need to be washed regularly. Avoid fabrics that are heavy, rigid or thick unless you want the cap to be worn by itself, without a helmet over it. For the bill, you may choose a rigid plastic bill insert (rip the plastic from an old cap or cut a segment from a plastic milk jug) or make a more pliable bill with a scrap of synthetic felt for the bill, preferably not wool so that it will not shrink. Lining is not necessary for this cap except if you use wool for the outer crown. Fusible interfacing is useful for stabilizing a wide range of fabrics.
