The Phaistos Disc

The Phaistos Disc (also spelled Phaistos Disk, Phaestos Disc) is a disk of fired clay from the Minoan palace of Phaistos on the Greek island of Crete, possibly dating to the middle or late Minoan Bronze Age (2nd millennium BC). It is about 15 cm (5.9 in) in diameter and covered on both sides with a spiral of stamped symbols. Its purpose and meaning, remain disputed, making it one of the most famous mysteries of archaeology. This unique object is now on display at the archaeological museum of Heraklion.

The disc was discovered in 1908 by the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in the Minoan palace-site of Phaistos, and features 241 tokens, comprising 45 unique signs, which were apparently made by pressing pre-formed hieroglyphic "seals" into a disc of soft clay, in a clockwise sequence spiraling towards the disc's center.

The Phaistos Disc captured the imagination of amateur and professional archeologists, and many attempts have been made to decipher the code behind the disc's signs. While it is not clear that it is a script, most attempted decipherments assume that it is; most additionally assume a syllabary, others an alphabet or logography. Attempts at decipherment are generally thought to be unlikely to succeed unless more examples of the signs are found, as it is generally agreed that there is not enough context available for a meaningful analysis.

It is a very beautiful and quality piece, the symbols and details are clear and visible, they do not blend into each other like most lower quality replicas. It is around the size of a 1eur coin and does not come with a chain. I’m sure it won’t fall off as the clasp is welded, so you won’t drop your pendant when you least expect. Silver marking is in inside the clasp. All in all, a gorgeous piece, so I bought another. Delivery wise, it took a bit of time for it to arrive, but the package was tracked throughout. The longest time was spent in customs, once it got past them it was smooth sailing.

This item exceeds my expectations. Forty two years ago I traveled to a magical place called Greece, saw the Phaistos Disc which fascinated me. I purchased a clay reproduction which I still cherish and display in my home. It's been on display everywhere I've lived since. I always check in to learn if it's secret has been revealed. One day, all these years later, I decided I wanted to wear this iconic symbol and found this reproduction. I could tell it was of high quality. I bought a silver chain and the pendant and chain go together like they were made for each other. I never take it off. It's my signature piece and I love it.
