Marie Antoinette was the last queen of France before the French Revolution. Her story didn't end well. But, before that, the queen led a lavish lifestyle married to Louis XVI and spending lavishly on fashion, luxuries and gambling. Her hairstyles were said to be as high as 3 feet. Meanwhile, the population was suffering shortages of bread and flour. Many were beginning to blame her for the terrible economy, and there was a Flour War. Even her mother warned her about her spending habits. We know the rest. "Let them eat cake," she said. She lost her head as a result.
Marie Antoinette liked dolls, it’s reported, and this little paper doll bookmark was hand-painted, with embellishments added, then printed and cut out. She measures, including her head, 11 x 4 inches.
Today, many of us heed her advice and eat more cake than we should. And we pay the price.
