Protected with a clear exterior finish.

My 'fly inns' are treated with a clear protective sealer, we use water proof paints. All of our birdhouses have clean-out doors that are easy to use, no screws to remove. It is recommended that you clean them once a year. As with anything, winter weather can be harsh so even though they are made for outdoor use, you might want to take them down during harsh winter months.
