Think you can't make a structured clutch on a domestic sewing machine? Think again! For this pattern & tutorial I have distilled all my little tips & tricks into their purest, simplest form. There are just 3 pattern pieces & the simplified step-by-step instructions include loads of clear photos & diagrams.
Some previous sewing experience is helpful, however, if you are looking for an introduction to my clutch patterns this is for you. Or perhaps are short of time, want to make multiple matching clutches for bridesmaids or just love clean minimalist style!
The clutch is fully lined & uses my easy method for inserting a professional-looking sunken/ hidden zip.
The finished clutch will measure approx. 24cm (9") long x 12 cm (4 1/2") wide x 5cm (1 3/4") depth, at widest points. -a stylish, practical shape which works equally well made up in printed or plain fabrics.

This design would suit wide variety of fabrics, including light weights fabrics as the fabric is re-inforced with fusible interfacing. A fantastic way to use small pieces of vintage or reclaimed fabrics!
YOU WILL NEED:
*Fabric for the clutch exterior: If buying off the roll you will need a 20cm (8“) length.
*Fabric for lining: If buying off the roll you will need a 20cm (8”) length.
*Mid-weight fusible woven interfacing: Important for adding body to the front, back & lining panels. Highly recommended: Pellon ShapeFlex Woven Fusible #SF-101 or Vilene Woven fusible G700. If 90cm (35 1/2”) wide, 40cm(16”) length; if 51cm(20”) wide, 70cm(27 1/2”)length.
*Non-Fusible Stabilizer: this clutch requires a very firm non-fusible Heavy-weight interfacing & this will give a semi-structured, boxy feel. Use “Vilene Extra-Heavy Sew-in” (this comes in 90cm/35” width, you need 20cm/8” length) or “Pellon Peltex 70 Sew-in Ultra firm (this comes in 51cm/20” width -you need 28cm/11“ length).
*Zip: Closed end zip, minimum 30cm/12” length (longer is fine as the excess can be trimmed), 6mm (3/16th“) width teeth. The zip can be nylon or metal but it’s important that the teeth are not narrower than this.
*Hemming Tape: 1.5 -2.5cm (5/8” -1”) width fusible tape, such as “Wondaweb” -you will need about a metre or yard.
tools required: domestic sewing machine, scissors, scalpel, iron, tailors chalk or pencil, pins.
If you wish add an interesting zip pull (such as the tassel pictured), I have posted some free tutorials on my blog:
