History of Mountain Artisans>
Founded in 1968, Mountain Artisans was organized as a nonprofit cooperative quilting business. Based in Charleston, West Virginia, the nonprofit cooperative was formed by a group of idealistic young women, including Sharon Percy Rockefeller and Florette Angel, and their successful designer, Dorothy Weatherford. If I remember correctly, Sharon was instrumental in arranging the "seed" money for the Co-Op to begin operation. Sharon Percy Rockefeller is the wife of former West Virginia Senator and Governor John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV and daughter of Senator Charles Harting Percy the Senator from Illinois.
Folk Art and a renewed interest in traditional crafts and the back-to-the-land movement of the 1960s provided fertile ground as Mountain Artisans helped to generate a renaissance in quiltmaking. Their marketing efforts garnered national recognition, and upscale department stores across the country sold their work, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to Macy's and local Specialty Shops.

** ALSO ~ ALFRED ALLAN LEWIS wrote a Fabulous book about the Artisans and Quilting...called THE MOUNTAIN ARTISANS QUILTING BOOK. (photo # 10) It's a great Coffee Table book and is still available online. ( my copy is NOT for sale ).
This simple "Jean Style" body is in a denim weight Ivory twill. The overall A-Line shaped skirt is a perfect example of how Dorothy Weatherford adapted patchwork to "Fashion". In this example, she used her talent in combining texture and color tonality with just the right scale. A simple Tree of Life motif using geometric petals features denim friendly patches to work well with a denim jacket or switch to a comfortable T-Shirt if the weather gets hot. The simplicity of her design is accented by the strong slimming vertical placement of the "Flower Tree". All of the above details made it one of her best sellers in the Summer Collection.
This was a Design Sample, so it is in great Vintage condition~!
