Hello! I am so happy you stopped by! I live in the capital city of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada with my husband Glen, and we are soon to be empty nesters! When I am not creating in my studio, you can find me at the local elementary school teaching some super cute munchkins.
Growing up in the very small town of Doaktown, New Brunswick (population was 1000 back then!), we, as kids, had to find things to amuse ourselves, and I loved being creative. My mom bought me my first sewing machine when I was 8 years old, and I began immediately making clothes for my Barbies. I even had a Darci Barbie (what are the odds of that? A Barbie with my name!).
My quilting adventure began when I began my family, because I wanted to make quilts for my babies. As my children grew, I devoted more time to my passion and I eventually discovered my love of creating art with fabric, thread, and other textiles. My husband and I had a studio built in our basement so I could have more room to pursue my art. I began Darcy Doodle Quilts in 2014 (now Darcy Hunter Art), and I haven’t looked back!
In winter 2017 I was discovered on Etsy, and as a result, I was featured in two magazines by Stampington & Company for my quilted postcards (Art Quilting Studio and Sew Somerset). I continue to publish in magazines and the thrill never goes away.
I have also received two Arts Smarts grants so that I can pass on my passion to elementary students. Giving back is important to me.
I rebranded my business to Darcy Hunter Art just a few years ago, to better reflect my business goals. I recently completed another grant to further propel my art practice, and I am currently pursuing a solo exhibition at some art galleries to show my larger works. You can find out more about that on my website.
Fun Facts about Me:
Some of my favourite places to shop are at secondhand stores. In addition to buying most of my clothes at these stores, I find lots of fabric and interesting bits to recycle/upcycle and use in my creations. I truly believe every little bit helps our world!
I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I did not figure it out until after I had my kids and decided to be an elementary teacher, and then an artist. I should have known both of these things when I was a teen heading to university because I loved being creative and playing “school” as I grew up.
Chocolate is my downfall. If you want to get on my good side, bring me chocolate! 😋
I absolutely love hot yoga, and it keeps my body limber so that I can continue doing what I love.
