Here is helpful information that may help :)

The bonding process is different for gold filled. It is also a thicker layer, it will last for years and years and is water proof.

Gold plated is a thinner layer of gold and does wear off over time depending on how much it is worn. It is still a good choice as it is nickel and lead free. For the clasp that is worn probably under your hair, no one would notice if it starts to loose some of the gold. We do use gold filled spring ring clasps that are added to the layered clasp. So it's a bit of a mix.

If you want something nicer and to last a long time, go with the gold filled.

That being said, I mix a lot of my jewelry and have both gold filled and plated. But for a keepsake or a more important piece I stick with the gold filled.

To prolong of life of your jewelry, please avoid chemical solutions, perfumes, excessive sweat, sea water and swimming pool water. Salt water and chlorine can damage your jewelry. Chlorine can damage and discolor metals that are alloyed with the gold and can slowly erode the finish and polish of gemstones.Also, lotions and sprays create a film on the jewelry, making it dull and dingy. To keep any tarnish or wear from setting in, take a soft, damp cleaning cloth and gently wipe off the surfaces of the jewelry, being sure to get in all the nooks and crannies. Keep jewelry dry. Moisture is the main factor that speeds up the tarnishing process. Store different types of jewelry separately. We recommend using a Ziploc or sandwich bag with the air squeezed out to prevent oxidization.
