History of Mountain Artisans>
Founded in 1968, Mountain Artisans was organized as a nonprofit cooperative quilting business. Based in Charleston, West Virginia, the nonprofit cooperative was formed by a group of idealistic young women, including Sharon Percy Rockefeller and Florette Angel, and their successful designer, Dorothy Weatherford. If I remember correctly, Sharon was instrumental in arranging the "seed" money for the Co-Op to begin operation. Sharon Percy Rockefeller is the wife of former West Virginia Senator and Governor John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV and daughter of Senator Charles Harting Percy the Senator from Illinois.
Folk Art and a renewed interest in traditional crafts and the back-to-the-land movement of the 1960s provided fertile ground as Mountain Artisans helped to generate a renaissance in quilt making. Their marketing efforts garnered national recognition, and upscale department stores across the country sold their work, from Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to Macy's and local Specialty Shops.

This simple "A" Line shaped wrap skirt is a perfect example of how Dorothy Weatherford adapted patchwork to "Fashion". In this example, she used her talent in combining texture and color tonality with just the right scale. A simple Flower Arrangement sits on the Table. The simplicity of her design is contrasted by the "Artist's" off-center placement on the body of the skirt. All of the above details made it one of her best sellers in the Summer Collection.
One of my Favorite Summer skirts! ....and after a close inspection, I can say that it is in great Vintage condition~!
