This is a very rare and unusual vintage pattern for a wonderfully lifelike sitting dog. He is named Desmond… a very old fashioned name for a lovely vintage knitted toy dog.
Although the knitting itself is quite straightforward, I would say this is quite an advanced toy to make. The row by row instructions are good with well set out and fully detailed written explanations; but there are a lot of them! There are no step by step images such as often found in modern patterns. I have added my own extensive notes to this pattern in response to many questions I have had and individually answered over time.(Sometimes a little help was needed with assembling the knitted pieces.) However you do need to be able to follow written instructions and look carefully at the one photograph in conjunction with them and my notes when constructing the toy.
You will need to have some sense of the 3D shape you are assembling. However the actual knitting is not difficult and if you follow the directions you should be able to make this lovely dog without too much trouble.

There is no size given –or tension gauge to calculate it with; however I include images of the Pebblespun wool used which was approx. Aran/10ply/worsted and I would say that from its use in other sources this is quite a big toy-about 2 foot (60cm) from paw to head. Of course a smaller toy can be obtained by using thinner yarn such as DK/ 8ply/light worsted etc..
