What does Gold Filled mean?

Despite its somewhat misleading name, “gold-fill” jewelry is not actually filled with gold—it’s really the opposite. To make gold-fill jewelry, multiple layers of solid gold are pressure-bonded to a core of high-quality jeweler’s brass using extreme heat. (Industry standards dictate that your piece must be 5% solid gold by weight.) The result is a thick layer of real gold and a durable, long-lasting product. Gold-fill jewelry is a great alternative to solid gold, as it offers the ideal balance of quality and value.

How do I clean and care for my jewelry?

We recommend giving it a thorough clean every dozen wears or so by soaking it in a bowl of warm water and mild dish soap for about a minute and then rubbing it with a cotton rag or soft-bristled brush. We also recommend storing well-cleaned jewelry in an airtight container such as a ziplock bag. Take off your jewelry before you go to sleep—it will do a great deal to help it last longer!

Can my jewelry get wet?

In general, for 14K gold fill, fresh water (such as from rain, a river or a lake) will not harm your piece, as water won’t cause them to tarnish, but be wary of harsh soaps and shampoos when showering. Do make sure to dry any piece off after it gets wet, and we recommend removing jewelry before applying lotions or creams, and putting back on once dry. Be careful of water treated with chemicals such as pools or hot tubs. For gold vermeil pieces, which is gold plated silver, it's recommended to take off your piece before showering or contact with water and before sleeping.

What is gold vermeil?

Gold vermeil jewelry has a base of sterling silver, and is plated with gold on top. Please note the layer of gold is thinner than with gold filled pieces. After extended wear, please note gold vermeil pieces may begin to show the silver underneath, so extra care with vermeil will allow it to stay brilliant and shiny for as long as possible. Some vermeil has a layer of copper over the silver to help with the gold plating process.
