Tapered Pillow Corners – Why Our Covers Aren’t Cut Perfectly Square

In professional upholstery, pillow covers are not cut into perfect squares. Instead, the corners are tapered slightly inward to avoid what’s called “dog ears,” which happens when excess fabric at the corners sticks out or flares after the pillow is stuffed. While it may sound counterintuitive, tapering the corners actually creates a square-looking pillow when filled. In contrast, square-cut covers often appear rounder or less tailored at the corners once stuffed. How do I know what size insert to get for my pillow cover?

In each pillow cover listing we include a recommended insert size chart. For a snug professional fit we recommend inserts that are 2" larger than the cover size if ordering a cover that is 18x18 or larger. For covers 17x17 or smaller we recommend an insert that is 1" larger. To measure an insert or existing cover, you need to measure it seam-to-seam using soft tape. If you don't have soft tape you can use a string and then place that next to a ruler. Pillows are measured seam-to-seam not by their overall size when stuffed. Our covers are designed for standard pillow inserts. If your insert has pleated corners then you would need a different style of pillow cover than we offer.

Pillows are measured seam-to-seam not by their overall size when stuffed. To find out the size of your existing pillow or insert you will need the seam-to-seam dimension. You can measure this by getting soft tape or string and putting it in the middle of the cover on one seam and pulling it over the pillow to the other seam -- making sure its not pulled too tight but that it rests evenly on the pillow. You need to make sure you measure the middle of the pillow and not the edges as the edges could be tapered which means they will measure less. Once you have this dimension you can reference our Insert Size Chart (included in all pillow cover listings) to see what size cover or insert you need. Custom Sizes are also available upon request

This beautiful pillow cover is made with a faux cowhide fabric with a soft velvet finish. It's a brown cowhide with an off-white ivory colored background.

QUALITY:
Our pillow covers are designed and handcrafted in-house using high-quality fabrics. Each pillow cover is two sided (front and back) with a zipper on the bottom so you can use both sides of your pillow. We use upholstery thread for added durability along with surging the seams so the cover can be washed.

Due to the fabric's pattern, each pillow's appearance will vary due to the pattern being in different places on each pillow.

INSERT OPTION:
If the insert option is selected then your pillow will come with a premium down alternative insert. The outer casing is made with a 100% polyester fabric and includes a zipper so that the firmness can be adjusted. If you'd like the Karate Chop look then you can remove some of the filling. We use a premium hypoallergenic cluster fill which can be re-fluffed in the dryer with 3 tennis balls on low heat when needed.

INSERT RECOMMENDATIONS:

WASHING:
When washing is needed we recommend washing in cold water on the delicate cycle with a mild detergent such as Woolite and hang drying. We do not recommend using hot water or the dryer.

** Please Note: Pillow cover edges are tapered so they don't dog ear. This means the corners will be less than the middle of the pillow. The size ordered is based on the widest portion of the cover in the middle. This is done to create a more square looking pillow when stuffed.
