To subject metal to a process of heating and cooling in order to toughen and reduce brittleness. By heating metals of different sizes to different temperatures and then quenching (cooling in cold water) it is possible to create purples, blues, greens and golds on the surface of the copper in turn creating interesting and beautiful effects.

To form (metal, for example) by heating and hammering into shape. To give form or shape to. After annealing the copper, the metal is pounded or forged into interesting shapes. Sometimes other tools are used to add texture to the metals.

In creating this pin I used copper. I love to cut, fold, stitch and rivet. Everything is connected this way, in other words it is “cold connected”, nothing is soldered. I enjoy the colors that happen when copper is annealed (heated). Depending on the size of the piece of copper and the way it is heated, I can create purples, blues, greens and golds. I love to stitch and wrap fine wire in and around the sheet metal to create form and texture. I also like to burn (heat) the ends of the copper wire. When I do this, the copper forms into balls. When the wire is quenched rapidly, the balls turn red.
