Moving Beyond Pinterest

After several years of pinning inspirational pictures of natural dye projects on my Pinterest boards, I finally decided to dive in. I took a crash course in natural dying (i.e. I Googled and read lots of websites and watched dozens of Youtube videos). Armed with my new knowledge, I made my grocery list. Over the next couple weeks I experimented with thrifted fabrics in my kitchen.

Chasing the Rainbow

Some of my projects were successful; the process was exhilarating! And, some were a total flop – in that my white fabrics stayed white. What was frustrating to me as I tried to trouble shoot my problems online, watch more videos and pour over library books was that I couldn’t find the answers to my questions all in one place. It felt like the world of natural dyeing was something you had to commit to and invest several years of trial and error in before you could achieve the rainbow of colors like in all those Pinterest pictures I drooled over.

The Search for Simple

I realized that what I was looking for was a series of simple, natural dyeing recipes. Like in cooking, follow these instructions and you should get results that look, more or less, like the picture. Simple, straight-forward and nearly fool-proof. And that’s what I decided to put together – the guide I wish I could have found that summer I decided to just start.

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive course on natural dyeing. It is simply meant to walk you through how to get started and to ensure that you have some great successes on your natural dyeing journey right from the start. It is so fun to see the beautiful colors you can make. Lets get started!
