This artwork is made of buttons and broken ceramic tile to represent a solitary tree. It was originally a tree painted on a 10 x 10 x .5-inch stretched canvas, but evolved into a hybrid mosaic and assemblage experiment. The tree foliage is made of white buttons with teal blue house paint as "grout" to contrast the unique textured details each button. Safety pins and soda can tabs are mostly covered up by the buttons but are a layer in the piece. The tree trunk is made of a long string of pearlescent buttons and grout both painted metallic silver. The background is made from leftover blue tile from my childhood bathroom's tile border and is also grouted and painted. I made the 2-inch frame from molding pieces and is painted metallic blue. I enjoyed seeing how this piece changed over time, and I hope it will be a fun and special addition to someone's home.
