Kantha is a very popular embroidery technique from West Bengal and finds its earliest mention in the book 'Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita' which was written some five hundred years back. It is basically a form of running stitch done along edges of fabric in various designs.
Traditionally, kantha work was a way to reuse old clothes. Women used to stitch together their old and worn out sarees using kantha stitch to create blankets, handkerchiefs and other items.
Today, this craft has evolved from being an activity done for personal satisfaction and comfort to a means of livelihood for the families. However, Kantha is still considered a household craft and holds a strong cultural and social significance in the Indian Bengali society.
Today, kantha embroidery has become a favorite form of stitch work with designers across the globe.
