These are lead-free pewter salt spoons. Before salt shakers were created, salt spoons were used to scoop and distribute salt from salt cellars.
Salt Spoon Style #6 resembles more of a ladle shape with a relatively large rounded bowl. This style is also replica from an original 18th century salt spoon mold, so it is historically accurate. The round bowl is about 7/16" (1.58cm) wide, and it is about 2.5" (6.35cm) long.
These spoons are made of English pewter, which consists of mostly tin, a little bit of copper, and antimony, so they do not contain lead. They are completely food-safe, and are perfectly fine to use for their intended purpose as a salt spoon.
As the name implies, these historic spoons were designed specifically for scooping salt. Pewter is a malleable metal that will bend, but is also easily re-shapable. These will hold up for their day-to-day intended use, which, again, is scooping small amounts of salt.
These spoons are cleaned up and filed smooth, with a low-detail polish (a consistent-silver colored finish). There are usually some file markings showing, since this is what the average spoon would have looked like in the 18th century.
The salt cellar pictured is not included. Currently, I do not have any salt cellars on offer, but they are something I am working to have available soon! Once the cellars are made, I will also offer salt spoon and cellar sets, so please check back!
