One fine day back in 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen was working in his lab in Würzburg Germany when he accidentally discovered the X-ray.

At the time, Roentgen was conducting experiments with a Crookes tube, (a clear glass gas bulb that gives off fluorescent light when a high-voltage current is passed through it) when he happened to notice that the light beam cast a greenish fluorescent light on a screen nine feet away, despite the tube being shielded by heavy black cardboard.

Roentgen concluded, correctly, that he was dealing with a brand new kind of ray, one that cast the shadow of a solid object when passed through an opaque covering from its point of origin. Not knowing what kind of ray he was dealing with exactly, led him to call it an X-ray and his name stuck.

To test his discovery, Roentgen made an X-ray image of his wife Bertha’s hand clearly showing the bones of her hand and a pretty hefty wedding ring.

Over the next few months, Roentgen published a physics paper about his strange discovery: “On a New Kind of Rays.” He made a presentation before the Würzburg Medical Society and X-rayed the hand of a prominent anatomist, who proposed naming the new ray after Roentgen.

You don’t hear the name 'Roentgen Rays' used much these days, but the term roentgenology is still current and the roentgen is the standard radiological unit of measure.

X-rays are no longer a mystery, but a major tool of medical diagnosis.

This fabulous original single-sided photogravure montage from 1911 of the Roentgen Rays in action was published by Queen and Company of Philadelphia. It measures 10.25" x 7.25." It's folded neatly down the center as it was issued.

It's in pristine condition; looking much like it rolled off the presses yesterday; not a hundred years ago.

Matted, framed and displayed as a gallery grouping, these lovely antique scientific prints are simply spectacular. (Please note that the framed examples in the last photo are to show how this might look when it's framed. Your print will come to you unmatted and unframed.)
