What makes your growth charts different than others?

My growth charts are 100% all hand routed. Hand routed is another word for engraved, but a hand router is a handheld power tool I use with my own two hands to route out every single cut which includes all the inch marks, numbers, letters and the two hanging keyhole slots I route on the back (one at top and one at bottom, so you can securely hang it to the wall). No other shop does this! Most shops wouldn't dare route out one keyhole slot, much less two. One reason I do this is because most boards are not flat, so if there is some bend/warp/twist in the board, the bottom keyhole slot helps pull the board into the wall securely. The hand routed nature means my growth charts are truly handmade, which is what Etsy is/was supposed to be about.

Why are other engraved growth charts cheaper than yours?

There are a couple others shops that use CNC machines to make their growth charts. These CNC machines can engrave the wood very fast (we're talking maybe 5 minutes at most to engrave an entire growth chart!) My hand routed growth charts take HOURS & DAYS to complete! I can't mass produce these like shops that use CNC machines. The reality is that these other shops are charging you way too much for a product that can be fully made in less than 30 minutes total make time. The only thing they may do to the board is POSSIBLY sand it some, paint or stain it and apply a finish. CNC made items are NOT handmade items. Growth charts are going to be a generations long family heirloom! Wouldn't it be nice to say that yours is 100% handmade?

Will the board be perfectly flat?

Probably not, but it'll be real close and your walls might even be crooked! Anyone that knows anything about dimensional lumber from big box stores know the hassle of finding straight boards! I literally drive around to 6 or 7 different big box stores constantly to try and find the straightest boards I can! And even when I find some, boards can warp/twist/cup even after I've started making them and after they are finished. Typically, it's not too much if it starts to do that and typically it's within what I deem to be an acceptable range. If you read my reviews, you will not see any complaints about very warped boards! I go to great lengths to try to find the straightest ones I can. Don't worry about this, I just like to be transparent.

How long will it take to make and ship?

This is a VERY IMPORTANT question. Due to how popular my shop is, I'm typically always backed up a couple of weeks. Then, once I ship it via USPS GROUND, it's up to USPS as to how long it takes from there. In 2024 christmas season, I had some that took over 2 months to arrive and many that took over a month! Major issues with USPS that year that had nothing to do with me. In 2025, they have turned that around and are doing better than ever. Hard for me to say that due to the amount of wasted and unpaid time I have spent over the years having to respond to customers about USPS issues! Once it's shipped, it's out of my control! There is nothing I can do, trust me, I have tried! UPS/FEDEX upgrades are an option, ask me after ordering.

More on SHIPPING (because it requires more)

So, once something is shipped, I have no idea how long it will take to arrive. USPS website says USPS ground is delivered in 2 to 5 business day! hahahaha....biggest load of bull dookey I've ever heard! Not sure why they are even legally allowed to say that! Sure, from time to time, some can be delivered within 5 business days, but that is not common! On average, since they have turned things around, it's typically less than 2 weeks once it's been shipped. That time can increase around the holidays and Christmas time. So, for over 6 years now, I start warning people in JULY every year, to get their Christmas orders in MONTHS in advance of December even starting! I will ship via UPS/FEDEX if you want to pay those rates.

So, yes, I will ship via UPS/FEDEX if you want to pay those rates. Those rates can sometimes be 2 to 3 times the cost of USPS ground, and they jack their rates up around the holidays. If you want me to ship via UPS/FEDEX, you can inquire about the actual cost, but ONLY AFTER you have ordered. It takes a long time for me to punch in your info on the UPS/FEDEX sites just to give you a quote. On Etsy, once you have ordered, Etsy makes it very easy for me to see what the shipping costs would be for usps, ups, or fedex on their site! I can then calculate the extra needed if you want to upgrade. But also understand, Etsy charges me fees for every purchase made, so I have to tack on their fees to those upgraded shipping prices as well.

Is hand routing neat and detailed like CNC engraving?

It can be if you know what you are doing. I have designed and made several template systems that help me make these faster, and then I use another purchased template system for the numbers and letters. But I have also had to alter those purchased template systems to make them much cleaner and neater than their original design! I would argue I am the worlds top expert on these template systems now! (ha) I have perfected that process now after having made thousands of these things. I also use different sized router bits than what those template systems are designed for to give these a unique look nobody else will have. But, remember, these are still hand routed. They are not made with a computer that makes perfect cuts, but they'll be close!

Do you make them with other types of wood?

I confirm every order once you order and typically when I confirm that order with words like 'select pine board version', I get messages asking if I have other board types! It's VERY frustrating answering questions that are already answered in my listings! PLEASE READ the detailed item description of each listing! There are LONG PARAGRAPHS of information for you to read and any questions you may have might be answered there! Also, go to the main shop page of Rustics by S.A.M. on Etsy and just look and browse all the listings! They are all different versions and or board types. Some listings will be of the same board type and version, they'll just have different main pictures. New hardwood versions now available: walnut, maple & white oak.

Do you have social media?

Yes, I have Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Tiktok. I use Instagram the most as of right now to post either video reels of completed growth charts or pictures. You can find the links somewhere at the bottom of my main Etsy shop page. Instagram handle is in fact @rusticsbysam2 The 2 is supposed to be there as my original instagram shop handle was closed down, so I lost a lot of material there. But check in on those from time to time to see new pics and video reels. If you are interested in the outdoors at all, I have a personal youtube channel called 'Outdoors with Magnum' that has a few videos up (jeep rides in the smokies, etc) One day I hope to thru hike the Appalachian Trail and that channel will be devoted to that.
