A soft yet sturdy, gentle and comfortable cold weather cowl. It is naturally dyed with wildcrafted lichen and organic home grown coreposis. It has the appearance of a giraffe, but it isn't.

The snow had mostly melted, however the wind was strong and determined to make its presence known. I just couldn't wait any longer to get my hands on the lichens growing on the oak logs in the community pasture.

It was April and I was freezing as I scraped the lichen with a dull butter knife off the logs, scrambling over them to get large pieces without the bark from the tree.

In Karen Leigh Casselman's book, CRAFT OF THE DYER, she states " . . . Lichens are an advertisement for clean air." She also says to be careful harvesting them because some of them are in a symbiotic relationship with the tree they grow on. I knew this wasn't the case for the one I was harvesting, but just to be sure, I used logs awaiting processing for firewood.

The creamy whisper of yellow in the cowl is gifted by the lichen used and the medium rust by the flowering coreopsis.

This is a unique one of a kind slow artwear piece.

I absolutely love the colors on this cowl, the regal gold and purple are amazing. It's wonderfully heavy and thick, and makes going out in the cold weather an event rather than a chore. It folds up really nicely so I don't feel like I have to stuff it in a drawer. The seller was very fast at processing my order and got it out to me right away. Knowing this was hand dyed from golden rod and logwood is amazing, especially considering how incredible the colors look. As someone who only buys natural I'm very pleased that this is chemical free. I love etsy because I like to support homemade craft and small businesses. The seller is even local to where I live. All in all immensly satisfied by my purchase, and would absolutely buy again.
