These bins can be created from ordinary, inexpensive, and easy-to work with 2 x 6 and 2 x 4 lumber. And they look great anywhere!

Having a backyard compost bin is invaluable when it comes to growing healthy vegetables and flowers - and these easy to build, attractive DIY compost bins are perfect for making loads and loads of great compost.

These bins are designed with creating the perfect compost pile in mind.

A compost pile needs to be big enough to generate and hold heat for decomposition. But it also needs to be small enough to be able to easily turn and maintain.

With that in mind, these bins are created using the well-known 3′ x 3′ rule for an optimum compost pile. A compost pile that is at least 3′ wide, high and deep is big enough to create the heat needed. But it is also still easy to flip and maintain.

The second rule of composting is to provide space for good air flow. And with their open slate side and back design, these bins do that as well.

For the front section, we created removable full slats that can be easily slid into place as needed. This way, as the pile grows, you can keep the space needed to turn the pile. And when you need to remove the compost, they simply slide up and out.

The tough 2x construction will hold up for years and years of composting.

Both the single bin and double compost bins are more than strong enough to hold a lid or tarp if desired as well.

The finished Single Bin measures 36" long x 36" wide x 36" deep and is made with just (6) 2 x 6 x 12’s and a single 2 x 4 x 8 board. Can be built in just a few hours with ease and only a saw and a drill driver.

Double Bin System

The finished Double Bin measures 71" long x 36" wide x 36" deep and is made with just (11) 2 x 6 x 12’s and a single 2 x 4 x 12' board. Just like the single bin, it can be built in just a few hours with ease and only a saw and a drill driver.

The double bin system is great for those that make and use a lot of compost. It gives you the ability to have a finished pile, and start an entirely new pile all at the same time.
