This Shirred Front Dress PDF Sewing pattern is reminiscent of styles from the 1970s era of fashion. Full, puffy sleeves and flared dresses were all the rage in the 1970s.

This dress has a center front panel with shirring in the bodice and fullness extending to the skirt. There are two options for shirring in the center front panel. The first option is to sew gathers and then apply a ⅛ to ¼ inch ribbon of choice or some other kind of embellishment along the gathers. The second option is to gather the front section with elastic for a smocked effect on the bodice. You may choose to use a lightweight cotton batiste or cotton lawn as a contrast. If you choose a lightweight fabric for the contrast insert, cutting it twice is necessary to line the front insert.

The neckline on dress is square and the skirt is semi-full. There is an option to use ribbon ties or make ties out of the fashion fabric. You may choose to tie the ties in back or in front.

There are two sleeve options for the dress: a puff sleeve option or sleeveless. The puff sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and have elastic in the casing for the sleeve opening. The sleeveless version is finished with facing.

The sewing directions for both the dress with sleeve and sleeveless show a contrast center front panel in the directions. You may choose to not do a contrast and use the fashion fabric instead. The directions are the same except that a lining is not needed for the center panel.

There are many options not listed for this dress. You may choose to do the sleeveless dress without the elastic and with an adornment on the center front panel of your own choice. Have fun with this pattern.
